Specifications---------------------------------------------------------------- 33 2 z General: „ “ Solar Inverter” (Pure Sine Wave Inverter with Solar Charge Regulator and AC/DC Battery Charger) is a powerful pure sine wave inverter, a sophisticated battery charger that features adaptive charge technology and a high-speed AC transfer switch in a single compact enclosure. „ Besides all this functions , however, the “Solar Inverter” has several advanced features that provides a range of new applications as outlined bellow: In the event of a grid failure, or shore or generator power being disconnected, the inverter within the “Solar Inverter” is automatically in less than 20 millisecond activated and takes over supply to the connected loads. „ Allowed them to continue to operate without disruption. The “Solar Inverter” is very powerful battery charger. General Information Operating instructions This manual is a part of the delivery package of every Solar Inverter (pure sine inverter+solar charge controller+AC/DC battery charger). It serves as Guidelines for safe and efficient operation of Solar Inverter. The instructions are only valid for use with the following models and accessories. z Power Master PM-1500SL-12 / PM-3000SL-12 z Power Master PM-1500SL-24 / PM-3000SL-24 z Temperature BTS-A-15 (m) z Remote controller RCC-A-03 (3m) / RCC-A-15 (15m) Any personnel who installs a Solar Inverter and / or works with it must be fully familiar with the contents of this manual and must follow exactly all the warnings and safety instructions. Installation of, or any work on, the Solar Inverter must be carried out by a qualified and trained personnel. Installation and application must comply with the respective local installations codes and safety regulations. 4 B. Warranty During production and assembling, all Solar Inverters (Inverter / Chargers) go through many testing procedures. Every Solar Inverter has its own serial number, which helps to refer back to its original data in the event of controls or repairs. That is why you should never remove the identification plate showing the serial number and must ensure you return your warranty card as soon as possible. The warranty period for your Solar Inverter is 1 Year. Power Master Warranty Terms and Conditions Power Master warrants this product against defects in material or workmanship, to the original purchaser only for an initial period of 60 days from date of purchase, when in normal use and service. The warranty period will be extended to a total of one (1) year if a completed warranty card is received within 60 days of purchase. No warranty will be provided on units which have not been paid for in full. Some models may have the option of purchasing an extended warranty period, see elsewhere in this manual for details. This manufacturers warranty is in addition to your consumer rights under local trade practices act. This warranty does not extend to products which have been opened, altered or repaired by persons other than authorized by Power Master or to products which become defective due to acts of God, fire, sabotage, vandalism, contaminated fluids, negligence or failure to operate, house and maintain the product in accordance with instructions provided in this manual. It is extremely important that all installation instructions contained within this manual are strictly adhered to, failure to do so will void your warranty. Except for the foregoing expressed warranty, Power Master makes no warranty, expressed or implied, including but not limited to, the warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. Power Master will repair or replace the defective product in accordance with its best judgment. For service under warranty, the buyer or installer must contact Power Master to obtain a “Return Materials Advice” (RMA) document and shipping instructions before returning the product to the factory including , installers time. Power Master will pay return freight charges, if the product is found to be defective within the terms of the warranty. Repair or replacement of any unit does not extend the original warranty terms in any way. This warranty does not cover repairs made necessary due to the product coming in contact with dirt, abrasives, moisture, rust, corrosion, varnish or other similar, or 5 failure due to poor quality or poor condition batteries. Power Master reserve the right with some models to supply an accredited installer with replacement parts, this may allow the unit to become operable much quicker. In this case Power Master are not responsible for any costs of the installer’s time or traveling expenses. Replacement parts are sent at Power Master discretion. Power Master will in no way be held responsible for any losses incurred due to the malfunctioning or failure of a product. Suitably qualified personnel must carry out wiring, failure to do so will void warranty. If you have any questions about this warranty, please do not hesitate to contact us. Caution: Even when a Solar Inverter has been completely disconnected, there can still be deadly voltages present at the OUTPUT. To remove these voltages, you must switch the inverter ON with the ON/OFF switch. After one minute the electronics are discharged and any work can now be safely carried out. Caution: In normal use, lead-acid and lead-gel batteries give out explosive gases. Never smoke or allow a spark or flame in the vicinity of batteries. The batteries must always be stored or placed in a well ventilated area. They should be placed in such a way that there is no danger of short circuiting through carelessness. Never charge frozen batteries. The Solar Inverter is not to be used or sold for life support equipment or applications. B.1 Special Precautions While working on batteries, there should always be a second person close to you or within your voice range, in case help is needed. Plenty of fresh water and soap must be ready at hand so that in case of acid coming in contact with skin, eyes and clothes, the areas in question can be thoroughly washed. If acid enters the eyes, you must thoroughly wash the eyes with cold running water for at least 15 minutes. It is recommended that you immediately consult a medical doctor. Baking powder neutralizes battery acid electrolyte. Always keep some at hand. Special care must be taken when working with metal tools near or on the batteries. With tools such as screwdrivers, spanners etc. short-circuits can result. Sparks produced by the short-circuit can cause an explosion. When working on batteries all personal metal items such as rings, necklaces and bracelets must be removed. Batteries are so powerful that short-circuit with these items can melt them and thus cause severe burns. Always follow the battery manufacturers instructions. Under certain conditions your Solar Inverter or a connected generator can start automatically. While working on an electrical installation you must ensure that 6 these appliances are disconnected before commencing any work. C. Introduction C.1 Basic schematic The Solar Inverter a sine wave inverter with integrated battery charger and AC Bypass switch with many additional functions. C.1.1 The Inverter The sinewave-inverter section of your Solar Inverter generates a sinewave AC voltage with an exceptionally precise voltage and stabilized frequency, In order to start large electric motors, the user has the possibility to employ a short-start-power which is 3-times the nominal power of the Solar Inverter. The inverter is protected against overload and short-circuit. A power-stage with the latest MOS-FET power transistors, a toroidal transformer, and a fast regulating system make-up a robust and reliable inverter with very high efficiency. A load detection system serves to provide the smallest energy consumption and ensures a long life for the battery. C.1.2 The Bypass switch Solar Inverter can be connected to an AC input source. For example a stand-by motor generator or the AC grid, such as shore power or a caravan park. With the transfer system, on one side you have AC voltage which is used to run the load, and on the other side the batteries are being charged. C.1.3 The Battery charger The built-in battery charger is capable of charging the batteries quickly and completely. A microprocessor controlled, 3 to 4 Step charging process ensures the optimum charging of the batteries. The desired charging current can be set. The battery charger can be used for lead-acid or gel batteries. Thanks to the floating charge ability of your Solar Inverter, the batteries can remain continuously connected. C.1.4 The solar charge regulator (optional) With the built-in solar regulator, the Solar Inverter is a complete solar-power-center. In a solar installation, this regulator ensures that the batteries are charged correctly. With the Solar Inverter, batteries can be charged with a generator and with the solar modules at the same time. The charging of batteries with both energy sources is carried out fully automatically. C.1.5 Remote control As an option, a remote control can be connected to your Solar Inverter with all functions. The remote control is supplied with a 3m long cable. This cable can be up to 15m long. (RS-485 interface) On the remote control output current and charging current are also shown. C.2 Battery connections Lead-acid batteries are normally available in blocks of 2V, 6V or 12V. In most cases, to generate the necessary operating voltage and the capacity of the 8 batteries for the Solar Inverter, many batteries have to be connected together in parallel and/or in series. Following three examples are shown: C.2.1 Parallel Connection: C.2.2 Series Connection: 9 C.2.3 Parallel-Series Connection: 10 D. Installation D.1 Location The location of the Solar Inverter must be chosen by the following criteria: Protection from unauthorized handling. Dry dust free room, no condensation, no rodents. Never install directly over the battery and never in a cabinet together with the batteries. Keep ventilation holes free. The ventilation of the Solar Inverter is designed in such a way that it will work most efficiently when mounted vertically. In mobile installation it is important to keep vibrations to a minimum. D.3 Cabling / wiring When making connections to the Solar Inverter you must ensure that all connections are carried out in a clean and correct manner and under no circumstances that a cable is connected to a wrong terminal. Connecting the Solar Inverter must be carried out in the following order. D.3.1 Pre-installation settings Before you start with the wiring of the Solar Inverter you must set the type of battery. If sealed-gel batteries are used then you must set the parameter P-04 ( Equalization charging ) is “ Disable “.. In case of normal lead-acid batteries, these can handle a higher equalizing charge, the P-04 can be set to “ Enable “, D.3.2 Connection to battery Prepare the batteries for connection. Prepare battery cables, if necessary press on cable tabs/shoes. Connect the red cable to the Battery positive fuse/circuit breaker and the black cable to battery Minus (-) Take care when connecting the second cable to the battery, as a spark is produced, this is caused for a short time due to high current flowing in the Solar Inverter to charge the capacitors. This is another reason to install a battery fuse/circuit breaker. For this reason follow strictly the safety measures described in this manual. DO NOT INSERT THE BATTERY FUSE AT THIS STAGE. D.3.3 Connection to the AC OUTPUT. The AC output must be connected to the screw terminal AC OUTPUT. For this, use a 3-core cable with a conductor cross section of 2, 5mm². Connections are marked as follows “OUT / N”=Neutral, “GND”=Earth, “OUT / L”=Live or Active. Caution: High voltage can be at the AC output, ensure the Solar Inverter is not connected when making AC connections. D.3.4 Connection to the AC INPUT The AC input supply from the electricity grid or from a generator must be connected to the screw terminals AC INPUT. For this use a 3-core cable with a conductor cross section of 2, 5mm². Connections are marked as follows “IN / N”=Neutral, “GND”=Earth, “IN / L”=Live or Active. 12 D.3.5 Connect the Solar modules: SOLAR IN +/- Solar modules are connected on these terminals. Under no circumstances should any other energy source i.e. wind generator be connected to these terminals. Depending on the power of the modules, the cable cross section should be 2.5 up to 6mm². Before connecting it is necessary to check with a Voltmeter that the voltage of the Module meets the following values: Power Master PM –1500SL –12 / PM – 3000SL –12 17-25V / 30A Power Master PM –1500SL –24 / PM – 3000SL –24 34-45V / 30A. D.3.6 Connection to Aux1 & AUX2: On these three terminals, it is a potential free change-over contact capable of switching a maximum current and voltage of 16A/250V ac. The “ multi-display “ on the front of Solar Inverter can show the status of these contacts. D.3.7 Connection to Remote control unit ( optional ): The Remote control unit of Solar Inverter RCC-A is connected in the “Remote control” of front panel with a RJ11 / 6 connector. The Remote Control can be plugged IN at any time. Push in the connector, without forcing it, until you hear the ”click”. Now the connector is locked in place. The same applies to the plug at the Remote control unit. The length of the cable for the Remote control should not exceed 15m, it comes standard with 3m cable. D.3.8 Connection to Temperature Sensor (Optional): To connect the battery temperature sensor we recommend using a wing nut style battery terminal to allow multiple lugs from the positive pole of the battery. Use the diagram below as a guide for connecting both the sensor and the positive battery lead. Always ensure that the positive cable/lug is underneath the temperature sensor cable/lug. This will ensure safe operation of both the inverter and battery bank. 13 E. Power Master reserve the right with some models to supply an accredited installer with replacement parts, this may allow the unit to become operable much quicker. In this case Power Master are not responsible for any costs of the installer’s time or traveling expenses. Replacement parts are sent at Power Master discretion. Power Master will in no way be held responsible for any losses incurred due to the malfunctioning or failure of a product. Suitably qualified personnel must carry out wiring, failure to do so will void warranty. If you have any questions about this warranty, please do not hesitate to contact us. Caution: Even when a Solar Inverter has been completely disconnected, there can still be deadly voltages present at the OUTPUT. To remove these voltages, you must switch the inverter ON with the ON/OFF switch. After one minute the electronics are discharged and any work can now be safely carried out. Caution: In normal use, lead-acid and lead-gel batteries give out explosive gases. Never smoke or allow a spark or flame in the vicinity of batteries. The batteries must always be stored or placed in a well ventilated area. They should be placed in such a way that there is no danger of short circuiting through carelessness. Never charge frozen batteries. The Solar Inverter is not to be used or sold for life support equipment or applications. B.1 Special Precautions While working on batteries, there should always be a second person close to you or within your voice range, in case help is needed. Plenty of fresh water and soap must be ready at hand so that in case of acid coming in contact with skin, eyes and clothes, the areas in question can be thoroughly washed. If acid enters the eyes, you must thoroughly wash the eyes with cold running water for at least 15 minutes. It is recommended that you immediately consult a medical doctor. Baking powder neutralizes battery acid electrolyte. Always keep some at hand. Special care must be taken when working with metal tools near or on the batteries. With tools such as screwdrivers, spanners etc. short-circuits can result. Sparks produced by the short-circuit can cause an explosion. When working on batteries all personal metal items such as rings, necklaces and bracelets must be removed. Batteries are so powerful that short-circuit with these items can melt them and thus cause severe burns. Always follow the battery manufacturers instructions. Under certain conditions your Solar Inverter or a connected generator can start automatically. While working on an electrical installation you must ensure that 6 these appliances are disconnected before commencing any work. C. Introduction C.1 Basic schematic The Solar Inverter a sine wave inverter with integrated battery charger and AC Bypass switch with many additional functions. C.1.1 The Inverter The sinewave-inverter section of your Solar Inverter generates a sinewave AC voltage with an exceptionally precise voltage and stabilized frequency, In order to start large electric motors, the user has the possibility to employ a short-start-power which is 3-times the nominal power of the Solar Inverter. The inverter is protected against overload and short-circuit. A power-stage with the latest MOS-FET power transistors, a toroidal transformer, and a fast regulating system make-up a robust and reliable inverter with very high efficiency. A load detection system serves to provide the smallest energy consumption and ensures a long life for the battery. C.1.2 The Bypass switch Solar Inverter can be connected to an AC input source. For example a stand-by motor generator or the AC grid, such as shore power or a caravan park. With the transfer system, on one side you have AC voltage which is used to run the load, and on the other side the batteries are being charged. C.1.3 The Battery charger The built-in battery charger is capable of charging the batteries quickly and completely. A microprocessor controlled, 3 to 4 Step charging process ensures the optimum charging of the batteries. The desired charging current can be set. The battery charger can be used for lead-acid or gel batteries. Thanks to the floating charge ability of your Solar Inverter, the batteries can remain continuously connected. C.1.4 The solar charge regulator (optional) With the built-in solar regulator, the Solar Inverter is a complete solar-power-center. In a solar installation, this regulator ensures that the batteries are charged correctly. With the Solar Inverter, batteries can be charged with a generator and with the solar modules at the same time. The charging of batteries with both energy sources is carried out fully automatically. C.1.5 Remote control As an option, a remote control can be connected to your Solar Inverter with all functions. The remote control is supplied with a 3m long cable. This cable can be up to 15m long. (RS-485 interface) On the remote control output current and charging current are also shown. C.2 Battery connections Lead-acid batteries are normally available in blocks of 2V, 6V or 12V. In most cases, to generate the necessary operating voltage and the capacity of the 8 batteries for the Solar Inverter, many batteries have to be connected together in parallel and/or in series. Following three examples are shown: C.2.1 Parallel Connection: C.2.2 Series Connection: 9 C.2.3 Parallel-Series Connection: 10 D. Installation D.1 Location The location of the Solar Inverter must be chosen by the following criteria: Protection from unauthorized handling. Dry dust free room, no condensation, no rodents. Never install directly over the battery and never in a cabinet together with the batteries. Keep ventilation holes free. The ventilation of the Solar Inverter is designed in such a way that it will work most efficiently when mounted vertically. In mobile installation it is important to keep vibrations to a minimum. D.3 Cabling / wiring When making connections to the Solar Inverter you must ensure that all connections are carried out in a clean and correct manner and under no circumstances that a cable is connected to a wrong terminal. Connecting the Solar Inverter must be carried out in the following order. D.3.1 Pre-installation settings Before you start with the wiring of the Solar Inverter you must set the type of battery. If sealed-gel batteries are used then you must set the parameter P-04 ( Equalization charging ) is “ Disable “.. In case of normal lead-acid batteries, these can handle a higher equalizing charge, the P-04 can be set to “ Enable “, D.3.2 Connection to battery Prepare the batteries for connection. Prepare battery cables, if necessary press on cable tabs/shoes. Connect the red cable to the Battery positive fuse/circuit breaker and the black cable to battery Minus (-) Take care when connecting the second cable to the battery, as a spark is produced, this is caused for a short time due to high current flowing in the Solar Inverter to charge the capacitors. This is another reason to install a battery fuse/circuit breaker. For this reason follow strictly the safety measures described in this manual. DO NOT INSERT THE BATTERY FUSE AT THIS STAGE. D.3.3 Connection to the AC OUTPUT. The AC output must be connected to the screw terminal AC OUTPUT. For this, use a 3-core cable with a conductor cross section of 2, 5mm². Connections are marked as follows “OUT / N”=Neutral, “GND”=Earth, “OUT / L”=Live or Active. Caution: High voltage can be at the AC output, ensure the Solar Inverter is not connected when making AC connections. D.3.4 Connection to the AC INPUT The AC input supply from the electricity grid or from a generator must be connected to the screw terminals AC INPUT. For this use a 3-core cable with a conductor cross section of 2, 5mm². Connections are marked as follows “IN / N”=Neutral, “GND”=Earth, “IN / L”=Live or Active. 12 D.3.5 Connect the Solar modules: SOLAR IN +/- Solar modules are connected on these terminals. Under no circumstances should any other energy source i.e. wind generator be connected to these terminals. Depending on the power of the modules, the cable cross section should be 2.5 up to 6mm². Before connecting it is necessary to check with a Voltmeter that the voltage of the Module meets the following values: Power Master PM –1500SL –12 / PM – 3000SL –12 17-25V / 30A Power Master PM –1500SL –24 / PM – 3000SL –24 34-45V / 30A. D.3.6 Connection to Aux1 & AUX2: On these three terminals, it is a potential free change-over contact capable of switching a maximum current and voltage of 16A/250V ac. The “ multi-display “ on the front of Solar Inverter can show the status of these contacts. D.3.7 Connection to Remote control unit ( optional ): The Remote control unit of Solar Inverter RCC-A is connected in the “Remote control” of front panel with a RJ11 / 6 connector. The Remote Control can be plugged IN at any time. Push in the connector, without forcing it, until you hear the ”click”. Now the connector is locked in place. The same applies to the plug at the Remote control unit. The length of the cable for the Remote control should not exceed 15m, it comes standard with 3m cable. D.3.8 Connection to Temperature Sensor (Optional): To connect the battery temperature sensor we recommend using a wing nut style battery terminal to allow multiple lugs from the positive pole of the battery. Use the diagram below as a guide for connecting both the sensor and the positive battery lead. Always ensure that the positive cable/lug is underneath the temperature sensor cable/lug. An automotive battery is a rechargeable battery that supplies electrical energy to a motor vehicle. It is also known as an SLI battery[citation needed] (abbreviation of starting-lighting-ignition) and its main purpose is to start the engine. Once the engine is running, power for the car is supplied by the alternator. Typically, starting discharges less than three per cent of the battery capacity. SLI batteries are designed to release a high burst of current, measured in amperes, and then be quickly recharged. They are not designed for deep discharge, and a full discharge can reduce the battery's lifespan.[1] As well as starting the engine an SLI battery supplies the extra power necessary when the vehicle's electrical requirements exceed the supply from the charging system. It is also a stabilizer, evening out potentially-damaging voltage spikes.[2] While the engine is running, most of the power is provided by the alternator, which includes a voltage regulator to keep the output between 13.5 and 14.5 V.[3] Modern SLI batteries are lead-acid type and provide 12.6 volts of direct current, nominally 12 V. The battery is actually six cells connected serially.[4] Battery electric vehicles are powered by a high-voltage electric vehicle battery, but they usually have an automotive battery as well, so that it can be equipped with standard automotive accessories which are designed to run on 12 V. A bell was used instead of an electric horn, headlights were gas-powered, and the engine was started with a crank. Car batteries became widely used around 1920 as cars became equipped with electric starters. The sealed battery, which did not require refilling, was invented in 1971.[5] The first starting and charging systems were designed to be 6-volt and positive-ground systems, with the vehicle's chassis directly connected to the positive battery terminal.[6] Today, all vehicles have a negative ground system. The negative battery terminal is connected to the car's chassis. The Hudson Motor Car Company was the first to use a standardized battery in 1918 when they started using Battery Council International batteries. BCI is the organization that sets the dimensional standards for batteries.[7] Cars used a 6 V electrical system, and so had 6 V batteries until the mid-1950s. The changeover from 6 to 12 V happened when bigger engines with higher compression ratios required more electrical power to start.[8] Smaller cars, which required less power to start stayed with 6 V longer, for example the Volkswagen Beetle in the mid-1960s and the Citroën 2CV in 1970. In the 1990s a 42V electrical system standard was proposed. It was intended to allow more powerful electrically driven accessories, and lighter automobile wiring harnesses. The availability of higher-efficiency motors, new wiring techniques and digital controls, and a focus on hybrid vehicle systems that use high-voltage starter/generators has largely eliminated the push for switching the main automotive voltages.[9] Design[edit] Low-maintenance or maintenance-free: In the past, batteries required maintenance in the form of electrolyte refills. Modern batteries retain their fluid for the life of the battery. A weakness of these batteries is that they are very intolerant of a deep discharge, for example when the car battery is completely drained by leaving the lights on. This coats the lead plate electrodes with sulfate deposits and can reduce the battery's lifespan by a third or more. VRLA: also known as absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries are more tolerant of deep discharge, but are more expensive.[10] Batteries are typically made of six galvanic cells in a series circuit. Each cell provides 2.1 volts for a total of 12.6 volts at full charge.[11] Each cell of a lead storage battery consists of alternate plates of lead (cathode) and lead coated with lead dioxide (anode) immersed in an electrolyte of sulfuric acid solution.[12] The actual standard cell potential is obtained from the standard reduction potentials. This causes a chemical reaction that releases electrons, allowing them to flow through conductors to produce electricity. As the battery discharges, the acid of the electrolyte reacts with the materials of the plates, changing their surface to lead sulfate. When the battery is recharged, the chemical reaction is reversed: the lead sulfate reforms into lead dioxide. With the plates restored to their original condition, the process may be repeated. Some vehicles use other starter batteries. the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS has a lithium-ion battery as an option to save weight.[13] Heavy vehicles may have two batteries in series for a 24 V system or may have series-parallel groups of batteries supplying 24 V.[14] Specifications: Physical format: batteries are grouped by physical size, type and placement of the terminals, and mounting style.[10] Ampere-hours (A·h) is a unit related to the energy storage capacity of the battery. This rating is required by law in Europe. Cranking amperes (CA): the amount of current a battery can provide at 32 °F (0 °C). Cold cranking amperes (CCA) is the amount of current a battery can provide at 0 °F (−18 °C). Modern cars with computer controlled fuel-injected engines take no more than a few seconds to start and CCA figures are less important than they were in the days of carburetors.[15] Hot cranking amperes (HCA) is the amount of current a battery can provide at 80 °F (26.7 °C). The rating is defined as the current a lead-acid battery at that temperature can deliver for 30 seconds and maintain at least 1.2 volts per cell (7.2 volts for a 12-volt battery).[citation needed] Reserve capacity minutes (RCM) is a battery's ability to sustain a minimum stated electrical load; it is defined as the time (in minutes) that a lead-acid battery at 80 °F (27 °C) will continuously deliver 25 amperes before its voltage drops below 10.5 volts.[citation needed] Battery Council International group size (BCI) specifies a battery's physical dimensions, such as length, width, and height. These groups are determined by the organization.[citation needed] In the United States there are codes on batteries to help consumers buy a recently produced one. When batteries are stored, they can start losing their charge. A battery made in October 2015 will have a numeric code of 10-5 or an alphanumeric code of K-5. “A” is for January, “B” is for February, and so on (the letter “I” is skipped).[15] Use and maintenance[edit] Heat is the primary cause of battery failure as it accelerates corrosion inside the battery.[16] A vehicle with a flat battery can be jump started by the battery of another vehicle or by a portable battery booster, after which a running engine (but running faster than idle speed) will continue to charge the battery[17] but it is preferable to use a battery charger. Corrosion at the battery terminals can prevent a car from starting due to electrical resistance, which can be prevented by the proper application of dielectric grease.[18] Sulfation occurs when the electrodes become coated with a hard layer of lead sulfate which weakens the battery. It occurs when a battery is not fully charged and remains discharged.[19] Sulfated batteries should be charged slowly to prevent damage.[20] SLI batteries are not designed for deep discharge, and their life is reduced when subjected to this.[21] Car batteries using lead-antimony plates require regular topping-up with pure water to replace water lost due to electrolysis and evaporation. By changing the alloying element to calcium, more recent designs have reduced the rate of water loss. Modern car batteries have reduced maintenance requirements, and may not provide caps for addition of water to the cells. Such batteries include extra electrolyte above the plates to allow for losses during the battery life. The primary wear-out mechanism is the shedding of active material from the battery plates, which accumulates at the bottom of the cells and which may eventually short-circuit the plates Environmental impact[edit] Battery recycling of automotive batteries reduces the need for resources required for manufacture of new batteries, diverts toxic lead from landfills, and prevents risk of improper disposal. Once a lead acid battery ceases to hold a charge, it is deemed a used lead acid battery (ULAB), which is classified as hazardous waste under the Basel Convention. The 12-volt car battery is the most recycled product in the world, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. In the U.S. alone, about 100 million auto batteries a year are replaced, and 99 percent of them are turned in for recycling.[22] However the recycling may be done incorrectly in unregulated environments. As part of global waste trade ULABs are shipped from industrialized countries to developing countries for disassembly and recuperation of the contents. About 97 per cent of the lead can be recovered. It is also known as an SLI battery[citation needed] (abbreviation of starting-lighting-ignition) and its main purpose is to start the engine. Once the engine is running, power for the car is supplied by the alternator. Typically, starting discharges less than three per cent of the battery capacity. SLI batteries are designed to release a high burst of current, measured in amperes, and then be quickly recharged. They are not designed for deep discharge, and a full discharge can reduce the battery's lifespan.[1] As well as starting the engine an SLI battery supplies the extra power necessary when the vehicle's electrical requirements exceed the supply from the charging system. It is also a stabilizer, evening out potentially-damaging voltage spikes.[2] While the engine is running, most of the power is provided by the alternator, which includes a voltage regulator to keep the output between 13.5 and 14.5 V.[3] Modern SLI batteries are lead-acid type and provide 12.6 volts of direct current, nominally 12 V. The battery is actually six cells connected serially.[4] Battery electric vehicles are powered by a high-voltage electric vehicle battery, but they usually have an automotive battery as well, so that it can be equipped with standard automotive accessories which are designed to run on 12 V. A bell was used instead of an electric horn, headlights were gas-powered, and the engine was started with a crank. Car batteries became widely used around 1920 as cars became equipped with electric starters. The sealed battery, which did not require refilling, was invented in 1971.[5] The first starting and charging systems were designed to be 6-volt and positive-ground systems, with the vehicle's chassis directly connected to the positive battery terminal.[6] Today, all vehicles have a negative ground system. The negative battery terminal is connected to the car's chassis. The Hudson Motor Car Company was the first to use a standardized battery in 1918 when they started using Battery Council International batteries. BCI is the organization that sets the dimensional standards for batteries.[7] Cars used a 6 V electrical system, and so had 6 V batteries until the mid-1950s. The changeover from 6 to 12 V happened when bigger engines with higher compression ratios required more electrical power to start.[8] Smaller cars, which required less power to start stayed with 6 V longer, for example the Volkswagen Beetle in the mid-1960s and the Citroën 2CV in 1970. In the 1990s a 42V electrical system standard was proposed. It was intended to allow more powerful electrically driven accessories, and lighter automobile wiring harnesses. The availability of higher-efficiency motors, new wiring techniques and digital controls, and a focus on hybrid vehicle systems that use high-voltage starter/generators has largely eliminated the push for switching the main automotive voltages.[9] Design[edit] Low-maintenance or maintenance-free: In the past, batteries required maintenance in the form of electrolyte refills. Modern batteries retain their fluid for the life of the battery. A weakness of these batteries is that they are very intolerant of a deep discharge, for example when the car battery is completely drained by leaving the lights on. This coats the lead plate electrodes with sulfate deposits and can reduce the battery's lifespan by a third or more. VRLA: also known as absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries are more tolerant of deep discharge, but are more expensive.[10] Batteries are typically made of six galvanic cells in a series circuit. Each cell provides 2.1 volts for a total of 12.6 volts at full charge.[11] Each cell of a lead storage battery consists of alternate plates of lead (cathode) and lead coated with lead dioxide (anode) immersed in an electrolyte of sulfuric acid solution.[12] The actual standard cell potential is obtained from the standard reduction potentials. This causes a chemical reaction that releases electrons, allowing them to flow through conductors to produce electricity. As the battery discharges, the acid of the electrolyte reacts with the materials of the plates, changing their surface to lead sulfate. When the battery is recharged, the chemical reaction is reversed: the lead sulfate reforms into lead dioxide. With the plates restored to their original condition, the process may be repeated. Some vehicles use other starter batteries. the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS has a lithium-ion battery as an option to save weight.[13] Heavy vehicles may have two batteries in series for a 24 V system or may have series-parallel groups of batteries supplying 24 V.[14] Specifications: Physical format: batteries are grouped by physical size, type and placement of the terminals, and mounting style.[10] Ampere-hours (A·h) is a unit related to the energy storage capacity of the battery. This rating is required by law in Europe. Cranking amperes (CA): the amount of current a battery can provide at 32 °F (0 °C). Cold cranking amperes (CCA) is the amount of current a battery can provide at 0 °F (−18 °C). Modern cars with computer controlled fuel-injected engines take no more than a few seconds to start and CCA figures are less important than they were in the days of carburetors.[15] Hot cranking amperes (HCA) is the amount of current a battery can provide at 80 °F (26.7 °C). The rating is defined as the current a lead-acid battery at that temperature can deliver for 30 seconds and maintain at least 1.2 volts per cell (7.2 volts for a 12-volt battery).[citation needed] Reserve capacity minutes (RCM) is a battery's ability to sustain a minimum stated electrical load; it is defined as the time (in minutes) that a lead-acid battery at 80 °F (27 °C) will continuously deliver 25 amperes before its voltage drops below 10.5 volts.[citation needed] Battery Council International group size (BCI) specifies a battery's physical dimensions, such as length, width, and height. These groups are determined by the organization.[citation needed] In the United States there are codes on batteries to help consumers buy a recently produced one. When batteries are stored, they can start losing their charge. A battery made in October 2015 will have a numeric code of 10-5 or an alphanumeric code of K-5. “A” is for January, “B” is for February, and so on (the letter “I” is skipped).[15] Use and maintenance[edit] Heat is the primary cause of battery failure as it accelerates corrosion inside the battery.[16] A vehicle with a flat battery can be jump started by the battery of another vehicle or by a portable battery booster, after which a running engine (but running faster than idle speed) will continue to charge the battery[17] but it is preferable to use a battery charger. Corrosion at the battery terminals can prevent a car from starting due to electrical resistance, which can be prevented by the proper application of dielectric grease.[18] Sulfation occurs when the electrodes become coated with a hard layer of lead sulfate which weakens the battery. It occurs when a battery is not fully charged and remains discharged.[19] Sulfated batteries should be charged slowly to prevent damage.[20] SLI batteries are not designed for deep discharge, and their life is reduced when subjected to this.[21] Car batteries using lead-antimony plates require regular topping-up with pure water to replace water lost due to electrolysis and evaporation. By changing the alloying element to calcium, more recent designs have reduced the rate of water loss. Modern car batteries have reduced maintenance requirements, and may not provide caps for addition of water to the cells. Such batteries include extra electrolyte above the plates to allow for losses during the battery life. The primary wear-out mechanism is the shedding of active material from the battery plates, which accumulates at the bottom of the cells and which may eventually short-circuit the plates Environmental impact[edit] Battery recycling of automotive batteries reduces the need for resources required for manufacture of new batteries, diverts toxic lead from landfills, and prevents risk of improper disposal. Once a lead acid battery ceases to hold a charge, it is deemed a used lead acid battery (ULAB), which is classified as hazardous waste under the Basel Convention. The 12-volt car battery is the most recycled product in the world, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
